How is it that humanity can be capable of such extremes of both these qualities. On one hand, people can care for one another so deeply that they would give their very lives to help another. On the other hand, however, a person can hurt another so intensely that that the other would end their own life just to stop the pain. It's not just the big things in the world like war and genocide that get to me. In some cases it's the smaller things like rape, bullying, and murder that cut the deepest. Perhaps it's because I have the ability to, in some cases, do something about them. Helping another human being is the single most rewarding thing I have ever done, but with every person I help, I know there are hundreds more that suffer. For some reason I feel so much empathy for the people who have told me their stories. In a strange sense I feel it personally. On more than one occasion I have lashed out at those responsible for the pain people tell me about. I don't know if it's the right thing to do, but the look of a person's eyes clouded in tears as they tell me something they are afraid to tell anyone else feels like justification. In the end I want to give them the hope that some people can be trusted, even when it seems impossible, some people are willing to fight for it.
